The fourth phase of the MCU has finally kicked off (and why does this sound like the beginning of a report on the execution of a villainous plan?). And if the constantly postponed "Black Widow" can be considered only a prologue to her, then "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" is already a full-fledged curtain rise. This is a film about a new hero for the universe - a kung fu master.
This character was invented in the 1970s in the wake of the success of films with Bruce Lee, and after a surge in popularity, he mostly stayed in second and third roles. A film about him has been in development since the turn of the century, but some five years ago, the obvious decision would have been to send Shang-Chi to a series like Iron Fist. Probably, having appreciated the undoubted success of "Black Panther", Marvel came to the conclusion that with the proper approach, even a little-known character could become a new fan favorite.
Shang-Chi begins with a story about those ten rings (although in fact they are bracelets) and how with their help the great conqueror Wenwu conquered Asia for a thousand years. And how no one could resist him until the proud warrior was overtaken by love in the person of Jiang Li - no less an outstanding warrior. The on-screen duel between Wenwu and Jiang Li is more like a graceful dance than a fight to the death. In the name of love, Wenwu renounced cruelty and devoted himself to his family - Shang-Chi and Xialing's wife and children.
However, a thousand years of the past cannot be thrown off like dirty clothes: soon Wenwu lost Jiang Li, hardened more than before, restored the organization and began to turn Shang Chi into a killing machine. Xialing reminded him too much of his wife, and he preferred not to notice her - the girl was forced to spy on the boys' workouts and exercise when no one saw her. Shang-Chi did not want to be a hitman in his father's service, fled to the United States, entered the university, found friends, and for the time being forgot about the Ten Rings. But, of course, the past did not leave him alone.
Shang-Chi's story is a typical hero's journey according to Joseph Campbell. The young martial artist diligently ignores the call of adventure and tries to live for his own pleasure. But the news from his sister, followed by the attack of the assassins, forces him to go home with his girlfriend Katie, who did not even suspect about the hidden life of the guy she knew as Sean. Along the way, Shang-Chi will meet assistants, gain mentors, and face difficult challenges before rising up and becoming stronger for the final battle.
