A group of scientists led by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have uncovered the mystery of the origin of the bright blue flash, which was observed in 2018 in a galaxy located 200 million light years away. This light signal, designated AT2018cow or "Cow", had properties uncharacteristic of a supernova, as the flash was faster and brighter. The results of the study, published in the journal Nature Astronomy, suggest that the source of the radiation was still a dying star.

Scientists found that in addition to the AT2018cow outburst, it emits pulses of high-energy X-rays at a frequency of 225 hertz, which occur every 4.4 milliseconds for 60 days. Based on the frequency of the impulses, scientists have associated them with an object with a diameter of no more than a thousand kilometers and a mass of less than 800 times the mass of the Sun. This corresponds to either a black hole or a neutron star.
Thus, in the Universe, AT2018cow was a side effect of the transformation of a star into a black hole or neutron star. The newly formed object continued to absorb the surrounding material left over from the original star, releasing an enormous amount of energy in a powerful explosion, one hundred times brighter than a typical supernova.
AT2018cow refers to FBOT (fast blue optical transient) - blue optical transient processes, and scientists are aware of only three such phenomena. In fact, it is a super-powerful explosion, visible in optical, X-ray and radio beams. It was believed that none of the astrophysical processes known at that time could give rise to such a fast flash, the growth rate of which was estimated at 42 thousand kilometers per second.
Things to know (Q&A)
What is the most powerful explosion in the universe?
One of the greatest mysteries of all is what causes gamma ray bursts . These bursts are the most powerful explosions in the Universe and occur about once a day.
What is the explosion of the universe?
The universe began, scientists believe, with every speck of its energy jammed into a very tiny point. This extremely dense point exploded with unimaginable force, creating matter and propelling it outward to make the billions of galaxies of our vast universe. Astrophysicists dubbed this titanic explosion the Big Bang .
What is a cosmic explosion called?
The most powerful kind of cosmic explosions known to science are called gamma-ray bursts – aka 'death from space' – galactic events so fierce their awesome intensity is only surpassed by the Big Bang itsel
What is the most powerful event in the universe?
Gamma-ray burst
A team of astronomers from the California Institute of Technology announced today that a recently detected cosmic gamma-ray burst was as bright as the rest of the universe, releasing a hundred times more energy than previously theorized.
What is most powerful thing in the universe?
That's about the same amount of energy in 10 trillion trillion billion megaton bombs! These explosions generate beams of high-energy radiation, called gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) , which are considered by astronomers to be the most powerful thing in the universe.
How big is the biggest explosion in the universe?
The biggest cosmic explosion on record has been detected – an event so powerful that it punched a dent the size of 15 Milky Ways in the surrounding space . The eruption is thought to have originated at a supermassive black hole in the Ophiuchus galaxy cluster, which is about 390m light years from Earth.
What was the biggest explosion?
The largest ever accidental explosion occurred in 1917 , when two ships—one carrying TNT and other explosives—collided near Halifax, Nova Scotia.
What is an explosion in space called?
These stars end their evolutions in massive cosmic explosions known as supernovae . When supernovae explode, they jettison matter into space at some 9,000 to 25,000 miles (15,000 to 40,000 kilometers) per second.
What is the biggest explosion in the known universe called?
A black hole about 390 million light-years away has caused the biggest eruption ever seen in the universe. The supermassive black hole sits at the center of a galaxy located in the Ophiuchus galaxy cluster. Its eruption was about five times greater than the last record-holder.
What is a cosmic explosion?
Observation challenges established theory of gamma-ray bursts in the universe. ... "They are the biggest explosions in the universe and associated with the collapse of a rapidly rotating massive star to a black hole . A fraction of the liberated gravitational energy feeds the production of an ultrarelativistic blast wave.
What is it called when a galaxy explodes?
Astronomers have spotted a cosmic blast that dwarfs all others. A gargantuan explosion tore through the heart of a distant galaxy cluster, releasing about five times more energy than the previous record holder, a new study reports. "In some ways, this blast is similar to how the eruption of Mt. St.
What is the biggest explosion in space called?
Supernova
The Short Answer: A supernova is the biggest explosion that humans have ever seen. Each blast is the extremely bright, super-powerful explosion of a star.
What is the most powerful thing in the universe?
That's about the same amount of energy in 10 trillion trillion billion megaton bombs! These explosions generate beams of high-energy radiation, called gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) , which are considered by astronomers to be the most powerful thing in the univers
What is the most powerful reaction in the universe?
On 10 April 1815, Tambora produced the largest eruption known on the planet during the past 10,000 years. The volcano erupted more than 50 cubic kilometers of magma and collapsed afterwards to form a 6 km wide and 1250 m deep caldera.
What is the most powerful celestial event?
GRB 080916C is a gamma-ray burst (GRB) that was recorded on September 16, 2008, in the Carina constellation and detected by NASA's Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. It is the most powerful gamma-ray burst ever recorded.
